The New Earth

When the new Earth was ready
with meadows and waterfalls
and spectacular pink beaches
we let the rich and powerful
fly over before the rest of us,
and it took little persuasion.
They said they'd build cities
for the masses to populate,
but it would take some time
to get the feather parks built.
The nations of ordinary folks rarely
found reasons to argue much,
living close to the land by and large,
not wanting to seem extravagant.
In time, news from New Earth,
from the privileged pioneers,
came seldom, then not at all.
People began talking about how
we didn't need a backup any more.
