poem
Volume 36, Number 3

In the future

when democracy’s wounds
have been bound
and sutured,
when the past
forty years
has at last
been cast
aside, and the slide
toward a darker side
has been slowed
once more,
and scores settled,
then the mettle
of each voter
will be put to this test:
how best to avoid
the next valley
another wrong turn
into another dark alley.
