poem
Volume 35, Number 3

Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps (1793–1884)

I went to my grave fighting
everything I was. I said

women should not work,
women should not write,
women should not vote,
women should not do science,
women should not have opinions.

What should women do, then?

We could make careers of
creating our own punishments.
